Have you recently experienced a flood in your basement or anywhere in your home? If you are searching how to get the job done, this is the place for you. Depending on how much water came into your home, to get the job done right, you will most likely need professional help.

How Do I Know If I Need a Professional?

If you have experienced water damage in your home, there are a few things to look for to see if you need professional restoration. Where did the water come in from? If it is water from the outside or from a toilet, you should call the professionals. It is unsafe to handle unsanitary water on your own. If you have a finished area made up of drywall, carpet, furniture, etc. and it has been affected by water, you should call a professional. The process of identifying if the materials should be kept or pitched takes experience and industry knowledge to determine. If indeed your materials need dried out, a simple fan from the store will absolutely not do the job.

Can Frozen Pipes Affect My Meadville Home?

1/27/2021 (Permalink)

Picture shows a close up of a frozen outdoor pipe with ice coming out of it. Pipes in outer walls, attics, and other areas less insulated are the most vulnerable to be frozen.

This winter, there is a hidden way water damage can cause damage to your home in Meadville. Pipes in your home can become cracked when water freezes and expands within them. Water expands 9% in volume when frozen. After there is water frozen in a pipe, a snowball effect occurs. Pipes do not burst due to radial expansion of water. Rather this newly formed ice will cause blockage in your pipes, and increase water pressure that bursts the pipes in your home.

Pipes in outer walls, attics, and other areas less insulated are the most vulnerable to be frozen. This vulnerability is increased if pipes are already cracked or loose to allow cold air to enter. In our area this can be more common than we think. It’s important to check pipes and areas of your home where cold air can be let in. This could be where phone and television lines are let in as well.

After a pipe bursts, your Meadville home can sustain significant water damage. This water damage can even lead to mold. What should you do if your pipes burst and you need to deal with water damage? You should immediately call SERVPRO of Crawford & NE Venango Counties. Our wide range of services include Water Damage Repair and Restoration as well as Mold Restoration and Remediation.

Water damage can be detrimental to parts of your home, and mold damage can travel rapidly if untreated. SERVPRO of Crawford & NE Venango Counties will come in and property clean up all water and then begin to restore damaged parts of your Meadville home. If mold is present, SERVPRO will contain the mold so it doesn’t spread, then begin removing it. We will eliminate the odor and restore your home to pre loss condition.

If your pipes burst, it’s important to act fast! The first 48-72 hours are crucial in fighting mold in your home. That’s why if your pipes have burst, and you sustain mold damage, call SERVPRO of NE Crawford & Venango Counties for all your restoration needs. Visit our Website or connect with us on Facebook to begin getting your home to pre loss condition today.

Does Bleach Kill Mold?

9/23/2020 (Permalink)

image of woman using chemical on sponge to kill and remove mold from drywall Contrary to popular belief, bleach just removes the color of the mold, not the roots.

If you have mold in your home or business, a well-meaning friend or family member may have told you to scrub it with bleach. There is an old school belief that bleach kills mold, because to the naked eye, the visible mold is gone. The problem is that the bleach just removed the color of the mold, not the roots.

OSHA (Occupational Safety and Heath Administration” and the ESA (Environmental Site Assessment) updated their guides and stopped recommending the use of bleach for mold problems.

There are 3 main problems when it comes to using bleach on mold:

  1. Chlorine bleach rapidly loses it’s effectiveness over time. Think about a chlorinated swimming pool. You don’t just put chlorine in once at the beginning of June and leave it all summer. Chlorine needs to be constantly replaced because it evaporates. The same concept happens with containers of bleach as well. Even though they are tightly sealed, chlorine can still escape from the plastic. There is no way of knowing how long the container of bleach has been sitting on the shelf in the store and quickly losing it’s mold killing power.
  1. It is toxic and corrosive. When you use bleach, it produces fumes that pollute the air and can be toxic to humans and pets. Bleach deteriorates materials and fibers of porous substances.
  1. Bleach does not kill mold on porous surfaces. Chlorine bleach can kill surface mold. Unfortunately, mold usually grows deep roots into wood or drywall and these roots will not be affected by the bleach. The bleach stays on the surface, and the water you mixed with it will seep into the cracks and help feed the mold.

You can use bleach to temporarily kill the mold on the surface. But in the long run, for the health and safety of the people and animals in your home, you should call a professional company that specializes in mold remediation.

The professionals at SERVPRO of Crawford and NE Venango Counties are highly trained and certified in mold remediation. We will utilize special cleaner and equipment to ensure the mold and the mold spores are gone. We can assess and treat mold-infested areas safely and effectively.

When Murphy's Law Attacks, SERVPRO can Help!

8/6/2020 (Permalink)

Cartoon of two people sitting in a downpour from a leaky roof SERVPRO of Crawford and NE Venango Counties is always ready to help no matter what Murphy's Law may throw at you!

It’s Murphy’s law that if something can go wrong, it will, and at the worst possible moment. You may be wondering, who is Murphy and what terrible thing happened to him that he has this outlook?

If you Google it, like I did, there are many variations on the subject.  Edward Murphy was born in 1918 and the eldest of five children. He attended West Point and commissioned into the Amy Air Corps. He was involved in the war against the Japanese in China and Burma and was a successful pilot and aerospace test engineer.

After the war, he worked as a research and development officer for the Air Force, working with the technological aspects of aircraft design. In this period of his life, he worked on experiments that eventually led to the creation and naming of his law, “If anything can go wrong, it will, and at the worst possible moment.”

It does not matter if you just bought a brand new home with a new roof, fancy appliances and good plumbing or if you have an older home that you have been taking care of over the years, you are bound to have a leaky pipe, missing shingles, or gutters full of debris. Of course, with Murphy’s Law, chances are, you won’t be home when any of these home disasters decide to occur.

SERVPRO of Crawford and NE Venango Counties is here to help no matter what Murphy’s Law may throw at you! We can’t stop disasters from happening, but we can be there within a few hours to start extracting water, removing contents, and begin cleaning up.

The professionals at SERVPRO of Crawford and NE Venango County have the training, equipment, and expertise to meet all of your cleaning and restoration needs. From water, fire, and smoke, to mold mitigation, deodorization, or biohazard clean-up, no job is too big or too daunting for us to tackle!
